Mystic Falls drops about 70 ft. off the Madison Plateau along the Little Firehole River. The waterfall consists of a number of tiers, beginning as a narrow rushing cascade, and fanning out at the bottom into a large fall. Thermal streams surround the falls, making it difficult to get right up to the base of the falls.
The hike to Mystic Falls begins at the Biscuit Basin parking area. Cross the Firehole River and continue on the boardwalk to the other end of the basin. Leave the boardwalk and continue walking west. At about 0.5 miles, a trail junction is reached. The trail will loop around back to this point, so you can go either way (it is about the same difficulty). If you go left, you will reach the base of Mystic Falls in another half mile. After enjoying the falls from the base, climb up the trail to a great overlook of the falls. From here you can continue climbing up the steep switchbacks to the top of the ridge. At the top, you will reach another trail junction. Go right at this junction to return to Biscuit Basin.
